Program
Guest conductor Guillermo Figueroa takes the podium for a delectable program of genre-crossing classics. Beethoven’s 2nd Symphony, a classical masterpiece, harkens back toward Haydn with its elegant symmetry and proportion, while the dynamic and vigorous Beethoven isn’t far below the surface. Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances, is a charming and delightful collection of old dance forms written into a more colorful and modern orchestration. Highlighting the program is a solo appearance of ASO Principal Cellist, David Gerstein, as he steps forward to present Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme for Cello and Orchestra. A work inspired by Mozart, Tchaikovsky’s idol, its original theme in a Rococo style has long been a favorite of cellists and audiences alike.
