Cellists in the Youth Orchestra

The Ensembles

PREPARATORY ORCHESTRA - John Jarboe

Designed for the beginning string player. Students must have studied their instrument for at least one to two years, be reading music and have learned at least two sharps and two flats in first position. Entrance is by written teacher recommendation only.

ACADEMY ORCHESTRA - Tom McDonald

The intermediate level group has a full complement of strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. String players must have mastered preparatory skills and be playing in 3rd position. An audition is required.

YOUTH ORCHESTRA - James Hatch

The most advanced Youth Orchestra boasts some of the top student musicians in the state. ASYO students consistently place in the top of the All-State Band and Orchestra competition, and are leaders in their schools and communities.

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

The three orchestras perform twice yearly at Robinson Center Music Hall, as well as individually at other venues throughout Little Rock and the state. Highlights of each season include performances at the Opus Ball and the much acclaimed Side-by-Side Concert, featuring the ASYO and ASO performing "Side by Side" on stage. This year's concert on January 29, 2008, features Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliet Suite #2 and Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2 4th Movement op. 27.

All students are required to have private lessons and participate in their school music programs.

WHO:

All new students who would like to audition for the Academy and Youth Orchestras and those students desiring to move up to the next level.

WHAT TO PREPARE:

PREPARATORY ORCHESTRA

A written recommendation from a teacher is required.

ACADEMY AND YOUTH ORCHESTRA
  • One major scale, 2-3 octaves
  • One melodic minor scale, 2-3 octaves
  • Two prepared pieces or movements in contrasting style and tempo
  • Sight reading
PERCUSSIONISTS
  • 2 or 3 pieces in contrasting styles
  • Sight reading

FEES:

$10 audition fee
$190 per season

A small fee to pay considering the quality of professional leadership and musical ensemble experience you will receive. Scholarships available.
