Arkansas Symphony Youth Orchestras - ASYO

The Arkansas Youth Orchestras began as a dream of the ASO's founders in the 1960's and today continues to attract Arkansas' leading student-musicians. Ranging in age from 9-18 and traveling from over 37 communities throughout the state, the ASYO has grown to 205 members. It is the goal of the ASO to provide quality ensemble experience and concentrated personal attention to any student desiring to participate in the Arkansas Youth Orchestras Program. Further, it strives to provide all the tools necessary to achieve this goal. Paramount among these is the Youth Orchestra Scholarship Program, a needs-based program that provides full tuition scholarships so that no student is prevented from participating for economic reasons. The three orchestras, with an average size of 62, are led by a team of dedicated professional musicians who are committed to a standard of excellence that all have come to epect from the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. Meeting in bi-monthly rehearsals and sectionals, the Preparatory, Academy and Youth Orchestras prepare for two main stage concerts yearly, in addition to performances in local schools and Hot Springs. Highlights of the year include the annual Side-by-Side Concert with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra in Robinson Center Music Hall; performing at the ASO's Opus Ball, and at the Oaklawn School for the Performing Arts in Hot Springs.

The Preparatory Orchestra, a strings-only ensemble of beginning players, totals 70 students and entrance is by teacher recommendation only. The Academy Orchestra, an intermediate-level group, is a complete ensemble of woodwind, brass, string, and percussion players who must audition for a spot in the group. The most advanced Youth Orchestra boasts some of the top student musicians in the state. Musicians in this group consistently place at the top of the All-State Band and Orchestra Competition and are leaders in their schools and communities.
