Jim Hatch is currently Orchestra Director at Mills University Studies High where he directs the Symphonic and Concert Orchestra. Jim also teaches 6th Grade Intermediate Orchestra and Beginning Orchestra at Fuller Middle School. He has taught at Mills and Fuller since 1989 and during the 1980’s was Orchestra Director for Jacksonville High School as well as Jacksonville area elementary and junior high schools. While in Jacksonville his orchestras consistently received Superior Ratings in the Central Arkansas Orchestra Festival. The Mills Symphonic and Concert Orchestra have consistently received Superior and Excellent Ratings at the ASBOA Region and State Concert Contest He has had numerous students from his orchestras in Jacksonville and at Mills University Studies place each year in All Region and All State Orchestras.
Jim served as Principal Double Bass with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra from 1978 to 2010 and has been the Conductor of the Arkansas Youth Symphony since 1983. Jim was also Instrumental Music Conductor for the Arkansas Governor’s School Orchestra for 20 years beginning in 1980, the founding year of AGS. Prior to AGS Jim was an Instrumental Music instructor at the North Carolina Governor’s School in Winston-Salem for 11 years.
Jim has been Instructor in Double Bass at the University of Central Arkansas since 1991 and is Principal Double Bass in the Conway and Pine Bluff Symphony Orchestras.
He has been very active in the Arkansas School Band and Orchestra Association and currently serves on the Executive Board as State Orchestra Chairman, a position in which he has served many times over the past 30 years.
Prior to coming to Arkansas Jim held teaching positions in Aurora and Park Forest Illinois and Wilmington, North Carolina and served in the United States Army Military Police at Ft. Benning, Georgia.
Jim is originally from Quincy, Illinois graduating from Quincy Senior High School in 1963. He received a BME and BM in Double Bass from the University of Illinois. While at the University of Illinois Jim was Drum Major of the Marching Illini. He received his Master of Music in Double Bass performance from the Juilliard School in New York City.
