It tells the tragic love story of Tristan and Isolde, two legendary figures from medieval courtly romances. The story explores themes of love, desire, fate, and the power of emotion, set against a backdrop of political and social conflict.
Clara Schumann - Piano Concerto in A minor (feat. Michelle Cann)
The experience: grand, luxurious, dramatic
Clara Schumann composed and performed her first and only piano concerto when she was still a teenager, and she was already considered as a prolific pianist and composer. The themes are linked with Clara’s improvisatory style, every new phrase built clearly on the motives that come before it. The melodies are beautiful and emotive, particularly the slow, middle movement.
Johannes Brahms - Symphony No. 4
The experience: powerful, dark, tragic
Brahms composed this masterpiece between the summers of 1884 and 1885 in a quiet Austrian town in the Alps. Despite the beautiful surroundings and his widespread success, his Symphony No. 4 is one of the darkest symphonies in the repertoire, which may have had inspiration from the Greek tragedy of Sophocles.
