Chen Yi - Duo Ye

The experience: intense, abrupt, chaotic

Duo Ye was originally composed for solo piano while Chen Yi was still a student in China, and she later adapted it for chamber orchestra. This piece was inspired by the short utterances of dialogues from the traditional song-and-dance performances of the Guanxi region. It is a significant work that showcases Chen’s distinctive style, combining a blend of traditional Chinese melodies with Western classical techniques.

Aaron Copland - Appalachian Spring Suite

The experience: charming, optimistic, uplifting

Choreographer and dancer Martha Graham commissioned Aaron Copland to write the ballet Appalachian Spring, portraying the American life. It tells a story about a young couple starting their life together on the American frontier. They face many opposing forces, but they continue to stay optimistic and show tender kindness. This suite concludes with a grand and uplifting celebration, featuring the familiar Quaker hymn, “Simple Gifts”.

Sergei Rachmaninoff - Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor (feat. Conrad Tao)

The experience: lush, mysterious, complex

Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 is one of the most challenging and iconic works in the piano concerto repertoire. He draws the listener into a labyrinth of interconnected themes that continues to grow more majestic and mysterious. Rachmaninoff is truly a master of knowing when to build up a grand climax, and he seems to never disappoint.
