Your Concert Experience
Fanny Mendelssohn: Overture in C Major
The experience: graceful, lively, celebratory
Overture in C is Fanny Mendelssohn’s one of the few orchestral works that she composed during her lifetime, and it really showcased her talents as a composer. This piece opens with a graceful, slow introduction which soon builds up to a lively rhythmic outburst that becomes the prominent theme throughout.
R. Schumann: Symphony No.3 in Eb Major, “Rhenish”
The experience: exhilarating, majestic, noble
Schumann's Symphony No. 3 in Eb Major is known for its lush orchestration, expressive melodies, and inventive harmonies. It is also notable for its five-movement structure, which was unusual for symphonies of the time. The symphony has remained a popular and beloved work in the orchestral repertoire and is considered one of Schumann's greatest achievements.
Dvořák: Cello Concerto in B minor, feat. Zuill Bailey
The experience: passionate, emotional, virtuosic
Dvořák's Cello Concerto in B minor is a work of great beauty, emotional depth, and technical virtuosity, and our guest cello soloist Zuill Bailey won’t fail to give an audience a powerful performance! Dvořák was inspired to write the concerto after the sudden death of his sister-in-law, and this personal tragedy may have contributed to the concerto's range of emotions.
