ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Carmina Burana / Carl Orff

b. Munich, Germany / July 10, 1895 - March 29, 1982

Few works explode onto the stage like Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. From the first thunderous entrance using the full might of the orchestra alongside the chorus, this massive masterpiece grabs the listener by the collar and doesn’t let go, taking you on a ride through the sacred, the profane, and the mystical.

Meanwhile, in 1936…

  • Jesse Owens becomes the first person to win four gold medals at the eleventh Olympic Summer Games in Berlin.
  • American rock and roll artist Buddy Holly is born in Lubbock, Texas.
  • Arkansas celebrated its 100th anniversary of statehood and welcomed President Franklin Roosevelt and his wife, Eleanor, to Hot Springs.
